HISTORY OF GLENVALE CHURCH OF GOD

In 1856 pioneer preachers crossed the Susquehanna River heading west into Fishing Creek Valley.  Worship services were held in the Oak Grove School, Hartman's Mill, a blacksmith shop and private homes.
The meetings were sporadic until 1882 when a bethel was built on ground donated by Alexander Hartman.  an educational building (now the Youth building) was completed by 1958 with a kitchen and bathrooms included.

As the congregation grew, it became obvious a new and larger sanctuary was needed.  Everyone in the congregation became involved in planning for the new building.  In April 1983, the congregation

voted unanimously to embark on a major building program.  The goal of the approved building program was to involve the congregation in the majority of the work so as not to borrow any money and accumulate any debt.

The goal of a mortgage-free building was accomplished, because the people had a mind to work.  Construction of the present mountain stone structure, a two-story 55' x 100' bethel, began in May 1983 and was completed in April 1986.  The first worship service was held in the sanctuary on Easter Sunday 1986.

During the 184 years of ministry here in the village of Glenvale, the purpose of the congregation has not changed.  The church provides a place to worship and Biblical education; a place where people, young and old, can come to know the Lord Jesus Christ, accept His salvation and join us as we continue to worship the Lord, study His Word, and serve Him by serving others.

The Lord has given our current pastor, Larry Hale a vision of this church becoming a hospital on the hill here in Glenvale.  It is to minister to the needs of the surrounding community.  Our policy is one of "open doors" to all who are hurting.
